It’s no secret that a majority of adults don’t like going to the dentist, and let’s face it, it is not uncommon for a child to be afraid of visiting the dentist either.
While it is our priority to make every child’s experience a positive one, sometimes we are unable to complete certain treatment due to a child’s overwhelming fear or anxiety. In this case, our doctors may suggest a different approach to effectively and safely complete necessary treatment.
There are many factors that are considered when suggesting alternative treatment options such as medical history, age, treatment, and behavior. Children who may benefit from sedation dentistry may have:
- A fear or anxiety of being at the dentist
- A short attention span
- Extensive dental work
- Unique conditions that may challenge dental care
Dental Cure is designed in a very child friendly manner which provides a warm and comfortable atmosphere. Our staff is well trained to handle the children and help them experience dentistry joyfully. Dealing with children is a completely different ball game. Dental treatments require voluntary co-operation from children. We make use of Behavior Management techniques to attain the utmost cooperation from the child. But few children where Behavior management techniques fail may require other forms of management viz. Laughing Gas/Nitrous oxide or General Anesthesia.
LAUGHING GAS/NITROUS OXIDE SEDATION
Dental Cure is one of the few pediatric dental practices in India that provides an unmatched dental experience under the influence of Nitrous oxide aka “Laughing Gas”. This technique is popularly termed as “Conscious Sedation Or Anxiolysis”. This is an extremely safe and effective method used over 5 decades to help apprehensive or anxious patients relax during their dental treatment. This procedure can be performed only on children who can comprehend to instructions. Children below 4 years are questionable candidates for this procedure. It requires the child to breathe the Laughing/Sweet gas though a mask placed over the child’s nose.Patients remain alert, awake and can talk to dentists and staff during their treatment. The onset is quick, the effects are fully reversible, and recovery is rapid. When treatment is complete, the nitrous gas is turned off and oxygen is administered for 5 to 10 minutes to help flush any remaining gas. The effects of the gas are limited to the period when the child breathes through his/her nose. There are no hangover effects as the gas is immediately eliminated from the body. The child can enjoy a regular routine for the rest of the day.
GENERAL ANESTHESIA
Dental Cure is one of the few pediatric dental practices in India that facilitates completion of dental treatment in one sitting under “General Anesthesia”. Dental procedures or even a dental check-up requires voluntary co-operation from children. We perform a lot of Behavior Management techniques to attain the utmost cooperation from the child. But children requiring major dental treatment, those in the pre-cooperative age i.e. below 4 years, or special children may require general anesthesia where these Behavior Management techniques fail.
This is an extremely safe and effective method when administered by an appropriately trained individual in a well-equipped facility. The child undergoes certain diagnostic tests and examinations to test if he/she is fit for the procedure. We work with certified pediatric anesthesiologists to care for your child during general anesthesia. These highly-trained physicians administer anesthesia to infants and children every day around the city. We perform the procedure in a fully equipped operation theatre with attached facilities for emergency management and a nursing home. You should arrive half an hour prior to the surgery. The procedure generally lasts for 2 1/2 – 4 hours depending on the nature of treatments required. After the surgery, we advise you to stay for half a day at the nursing home to monitor your child after which he/she can be discharged.
It is natural for you to feel anxious about a child undergoing dental treatment under General Anesthesia. But trust us; you shall be completely relieved to see your child back with a dazzling painless smile.
